Aug 17, 2026 7:33pm Sensors Applications Sensors Markets Industrial / Manufacturing Specialized Domains --> NXP Semiconductors promoted its long-term prowess in edge computing mainly in the auto sector where sensors play a vital role during a briefing session with reporters and analysts on the eve of its NXP Technology Days event. The company said it is prepared for a coming world of advanced robotics and humanoids after having spent years developing and producing microcontrollers, neural processors and other components that today largely support the automotive sector, an area which makes up 58% of NXP’s revenues. “The edge is our home. This is something we’ve done for years” in automotive and industrial sectors, said Charles Dachs, executive vice president and general manager for secure connected edge products and industrial strategy. NXP is focused mainly on six growth markets going forward, he said, which he identified as healthcare, building automation, robotics, factory automation, power & energy and data center infrastructure. “The fastest growing is robotics,” he said. “It’s small, but it’s growing…Robotics had been a part of factory automation, but now it is accelerating, quite accelerating, including in humanoids. There’s dedicated attention on how to address the upcoming robotics market.” Today, NXP can make up nearly all the components needed in a drone and some factory automation, while it might today provide more than half of what’s needed for a complex humanoid, said Altaf Hussain, senior robotics marketing manager for NXP. A full humanoid would require the addition of an Nvidia GPU with its connection to memory. With a humanoid, there will be multiple sensors in each hand and finger, all of which will have a controller capability close by for tiny adjustments needed to move and hold an object. Dachs spoke of how the fast pace of technology growth with AI has led to a blurring of the line between automotive and robotics. “For what it takes to build a robot, a lot of capabilities in auto [and industrial] are relevant,” he said. “This is what is so exciting. The end markets are blurring. There’s no such thing as building just for auto.” In an interview with Fierce, Dachs talked about what must happen before humanoids become a material semiconductor market for NXP. At first, he didn’t answer, but asked again, he said it is important for NXP to be involved in preparations for humanoids in order be ready for all the supporting tech involved in making humanoids, which may become important to NXP customers building a variety of robots, not necessarily robots up to the sophistication of a humanoid. The ultimate point when humanoids become material semiconductor market for NXP will be reached when humanoids become deemed safe enough to work in homes and classrooms and around more different groups, often labeled consumer markets, not just in industrial settings, Dachs said. Have humanoids been overhyped? “I don’t know, but the fact is they are going to happen. It’s just a question of when,” he said.
