Aug 18, 2026 3:00am Sensors Applications Magnetic / Electrical Sensors Markets Industrial / Manufacturing --> Sensors-related companies are moving squarely into support for Physical AI applications used in industrial and building automation, as well as robots and medical devices. NXP Semiconductors is no exception as it updates developers and customers on its physical AI strategy at NXP Technology Day in Santa Clara, Calif.
In line with that direction, NXP announced a family of MCX A5 microcontrollers on Tuesday that rely on post-quantum cryptography (PQC) to affordably secure Ethernet-connected endpoints in industrial and edge locations. Advanced robots and manufacturing automation machinery in the AI era broadly rely on Ethernet networks for stability and now NXP is moving into Ethernet quantum security as well.
The MCX A5 family is built on an Arm Cortex-M33 core supporting Ethernet networks at up to 240 MHz over 10BASE-T1S. These MCUs support compact, low-cost Ethernet networks for distributed industrial nodes, “reducing components, cost and design complexity for industrial connectivity,” NXP said in a statement.
Calling the A5 "groundbreaking," NXP's Justin Mortimer, senior director of technical marketing told reporters it will allow NXP customers to "harness the capabilities of AI at the edge...in the industrial space." The industrial space includes the building automation and manufacturing verticals.
Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) refers to systems designed to be safe from cyber attacks by future quantum computers. In the new MCX A5 family, NXP has combined PSA Certified Level 3 security with support for PQC, including a PQC-based hardware root of trust element that has secure boot, secure firmware updates, secure attestation and secure debug authentication.
When the MCX A5 family is paired with the NXP's TJF1410 10Base-T1S physical medium dependent transceiver, customers will have a complete single pair Ethernet design for use in industrial and building automation applications. The TJF1410 is optimized for IEEE 802.3cg-compliant 10BASE T1S networks. This capability "allows all end nodes to communicate together" for building automation, the first in the industry to do so, Mortimer said.
NXP named HVAC sensor-manufacturer CAREL Industries as a customer of the MCX A5 family and a CAREL official identified the PQC capabilities as an important feature. “The future of industrial AI depends on access to trusted data, requiring connectivity, cybersecurity and AI to work together seamlessly,” said Paolo Faraldi, CTO at CAREL in a statement.
“The MCX A5 family delivers the forward-looking innovation we require, combining advanced Ethernet connectivity with next-generation security technologies such as post-quantum cryptography to gather trusted data from the very edge of industrial systems. This ensures we are more than ready to deliver state-of-the-art solutions our customers need and to the challenges that will emerge over the coming years,” Faraldi said.
NXP said the MCX A5 family is sampling now. Pricing was not announced.
The microcontroller news comes amid a corporate shift at NXP after NXP completed the sale of MEMS sensors business to STMicroelectronics on Feb. 2 for $950 million. NXP transferred accelerometers, angular-rate/acceleration combination sensors and pressure sensors to ST. ST is the foundry for those components and had been even before the sale. Now NXP is now positioning itself as a higher-layer provider than a provider MEMS components, connecting distributed sensors and actuators with centralized AI compute and also using Nvidia Holoscan Sensor Bridge.
ST laid out its connection to Holoscan and said in June it provides sensors and microcontrollers for Holoscan. NXP laid out its connection to Holoscan in March.
NXP has lately seen its revenues on the rise, reaching $3.5 billion for the second quarter, up 19% year-over-year. On an earnings call, CEO Rafael Sotomayor noted that AI is moving from th
