Aug 18, 2026 9:29pm Sensors Applications Motion / Proximity / Position Industrial / Manufacturing Automotive / Transportation --> NXP Technology Days 2026 brought together 900 engineers to Santa Clara, Calif., to explore the company’s wide range of sensors, actuators, neural processors and a growing range of software products.
Many of the developers in attendance were from the Silicon Valley startup community, now estimated to include about 17,000 companies, some with only one or two staffers. Many of the new startups are heavily devoted to designing robotics applications, which NXP has identified as its fastest growing tech vertical market.
Also present were more than 30 partners using NXP tech to create applications, including some as unusual as virtual sensors. With a virtual sensor, a company won’t need an actual sensor to measure or detect something, like tire wear or engine fatigue in a vehicle.
To that end, NXP partner Sonatus showed off its Fastlane Edge software platform to provide vehicle intelligence through use of AI models with virtual sensors and diagnostics directly inside a vehicle. Sonatus products are deployed in 8 million production vehicles, including from Hyundai, Kia and Genesis.
Michelin is using virtual sensors and Fastlane Edge to detect tire wear, basing its insights on intelligence gathered from the vehicle itself, including miles traveled and conditions detected about acceleration, braking and more, according to John Heinlein, chief marketing officer for Sonatus.
Compredict is another Fastlane Edge customer, providing insights about engine wear in Renault vehicles based on virtual sensors that compare average historical engine performance with actual high-frequency time-series data into physical signals. Compredict, by the way, doesn’t advertise it uses no hardware sensors, only “fewer hardware sensors.” Sonatus partners with NXP on the S32G vehicle network processor, which is engineered as a central gateway and domain controller.
Another partner at NXP Technology Days, Murata Electronics, showed its use of NXP tech to provide UWB wireless connectivity for robots and other electronics. Now, NXP and Murata Electronics are rolling out UWB combined with radar sensing on a chip.
In a demonstration, the new chip, 2HQ, was used to open a doorway latch when the chip came within a few feet, and also to close the latch a few feet away. Murata said the capability could be used in hospitals to allow a family member of a patient to pass through permitted doorways, but not doorways inaccessible to the public.
Silex Technology described the value of protecting medical and industrial gear against cyber threats with Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) compliant technology through the use of System-on-Module tech, which is a full embedded processing system with cores, communications and memory.
NXP’s Tech Days event is a long-running series that invites developers to learn in detail about NXP products. An event last year focused on automotive in Detroit. The Santa Clara presence in the Valley and the frequent mention of robotics technologies showed where NXP’s head is at.
