Cook considered genius of execution as his CEO era ends at Apple
Apple designs in-house silicon across its products, creating an ecosystem for sensors and other components

Aug 31, 2026 1:49pm Apple Sensors Applications Motion / Proximity / Position Consumer --> As Tim Cook wraps up his final day as CEO of Apple, he is regarded as a genius of product and process execution. That achievement includes the company’s transition to Apple-designed silicon, fulfilled across the Mac line by 2023, one example of Apple’s in-house silicon family. Apple today is helping create a US-based ecosystem for sensors, mixed-signal ICs, packaging and semiconductor manufacturing. While Apple is not fabricating its own chips like Intel and others, it has highlighted its future efforts in US sourcing and is backing TSMC’s multi-billion investment in Arizona fabs. It has also engaged in other sourcing arrangements with Texas Instruments and GlobalFoundries as part of an American manufacturing strategy. Redesigning all of Apple’s computing platform around its own chips has been a herculean effort. Cook and team pulled off the transformation without breaking the business and on schedule, IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo pointed out. “The operational machine [Cook] leaves behind, the manufacturing relationships, the inventory control, the logistics, is the least glamorous and possibly the most durable thing about his tenure,” Jeronimo said. Jeronimo and many others regard Cook’s predecessor Steve Jobs as a genius in innovation, putting Cook in the stratosphere of execution. When Cook succeeded Jobs in August 2011, Apple had $108 billion in revenue for the full year, a number that grew to $416 billion in 2025. Apple’s market cap jumped from $350 billion to nearly $5 trillion, briefly, earlier this year. The stock has risen nearly 20x over Cook’s tenure. Over its entire product line, Apple has an installed base of more than 2.5 billion active devices, setting it in a position that competitors cannot easily replicate, he added. “Whatever else is said about Cook, he presided over one of the largest sustained acts of value creation in corporate history,” Jeronimo said. Cook built a wearables and accessory business “almost from nothing,” with Apple Watch and AirPods, Jeronimo said. “The Watch alone created a category the rest of the industry is chasing,” he added. Cook has not delivered a new product on the scale of iPhone created under Jobs, however, and the Vision Pro mixed reality headset introduced under Cook’s stewardship has not found a mass market. Some even consider it a failure. It currently sells at a starting price of $3,699 and is said to cost Apple far more. Apple’s Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch lines are dependent on multiple sensors, creating a vast market for discrete sensors suppliers of all types. These include vision and IR sensors in some devices and often position and acoustic sensors. Apple’s strategy over 15 years has been to include Apple-designed silicon in nearly every major hardware category. With Mac laptops, the Apple M-series helped it completely transition away from Intel chips in 2023. The iPad uses uses Apple’s A-series or M-series chips and iPhone uses A- series chips now up to the A19. Apple Watch relies on the S-series system-in-package while the Vision Pro uses M-series processors among others. The A4 chip was introduced in the original iPad in 2010 and then in the iPhone 4. It is considered the first major Apple-designed application processor. In 2020, Apple announced the Mac transition to M-series processors, finishing the transition away from Intel processors in 2023. The benefits to Apple of in-house silicon are expected to last well beyond Cook and into the tenure of incoming CEO John Ternus when he takes over the helm on Tuesday. Ternus, senior vice president of hardware engineering, has built a career on the products central to Apple, including the silicon transition, “and few people inside or outside the company understand apple’s product architecture as well as he does,” Jeronimo added. Much has been said about Apple’s inability to lead in AI and Ternus has to “close the
