Tesla’s Cybercab reveal: driverless gold glitz and electric braking
Electric brakes in Tesla’s Cybercab mean there’s no brake fluid and brake lines running around the car. Sensors and actuators control each brake caliper.

Sep 4, 2026 8:16am Industrial / Manufacturing Automotive / Transportation Motion / Proximity / Position Mechanical / Force / Tactile --> Tesla’s reveal of the purpose-built, “gleaming gold” Cybercab in Austin, Texas, leaves many questions, but wowed gearheads at the private event with new tech. Electric braking for one. With electric brake-by-wire, Tesla is replacing brake fluid and lines with individual sensors and actuators on each brake caliper at each wheel for precise control. Bosch supplies those sensors and actuators, according to bloggers at the event. The brake controls boost efficiency by retracting brake pads fully when not braking. Maintenance costs are down as well. It is the first Tesla without any brake fluid. And oh, no brake pedals and no steering wheel as well. Which means—no human driver. Attendees got to try out butterfly doors and the two-seater quality. "First-class experience at coach price." “Having electric brakes avoids the complexity of a hydraulic system; no need to route plumbing all around the car,” Telsa CEO Elon Musk wrote on X. In a flashy video reveal on X , Musk is heard describing Cybercab as “the first car that is specifically built for unsupervised full self driving.” Blogger Sawyer Merritt praised the Cybercab drive unit, with sub-10-second cycle times. It is 18% smaller, 25% lighter and more efficient than other top electric vehicle drive units. In summary, Tesla did prove Cybercab is real and operating in Austin with no pedals or steering wheel and the public can start riding it. But many questions remain from the event. Payments for rides by an app will be variable, but it isn’t clear how many Cybercabs are available in the fleet or how much of Austin streets or other areas they will travel. Yes, Tesla is sticking with its longstanding vision-first sensing in its Full Self Driving approach, and there was some discussion at the launch for why Tesla believes cameras beat lidar. One engineer at the event gave an explanation that mimics earlier comments by Musk and others, mainly that cameras mimic the eyes of human drivers. The explanation, significantly, notes that any sensor cannot predict future events and an intelligent agent is needed to make predictions. Tesla announced it has passed 1 million miles of unsupervised robotaxi operations, helping train its self-driving model. Here's a portion of what Tesla engineer Ashok Elluswamy, vice president of AI software, said on stage at the event, from a video posted by Merritt: "We started this program... with one goal: to build the safest and the most affordable, scaleable solution... Along the way every expert said you cannot build a safe self-driving vehicle with just cameras. They said you need a lidar, you need a radar, you need HD maps and everything else to drive the car safely. We at Tesla have never believed this. "We always thought the core issue for self-driving is intelligence. You need to understand what is going on. You need to predict what is going to happen in the future and no sensor in the world is going to tell you what is going to happen in the future. It is something an intelligent agent is going to have to figure out what is going to happen in the future and act accordingly to achieve the safety, "That is why we have built an end-to-end driving stack that takes in camera images from all around the car constantly paying attention and solving for one thing which is driving you safely. How do we know this is possible? Because humans drive around all day long using cameras, [eyes]. It's not something we invented. It's already there. We just needed to find a way to put in an additional computer. And that's what we believe we have built.. "As a testament to the safety, I'm happy to announce that, we have achieved one million miles of unsupervised Robotaxi [operation].." Owners of Teslas have helped train the system as well with Tesla's Full Self Driving feature. Here is the full Cybercab launch event presentation
