Sep 10, 2026 12:58pm Analog Devices Physical AI Medical / Healthcare Sensors Applications --> Analog Devices announced it will acquire Alif Semiconductor for $1.35 billion, all cash, in another industry bid to beef up physical AI capabilities.
Chipmakers are consolidating internally or through purchases of other companies or their divisions around the goal of holding a large part of the physical AI value chain, ranging from perception/sensing to decision/action.
The Alif purchase is designed to help ADI enable systems to sense, reason and act locally in real time. The deal expands ADI’s market opportunities in industrial, data center infrastructure, defense, energy, robotics, digital health and wearables.
Alif has a platform supporting high-efficiency AI-native microcontrollers and fusion processors to enable real-time sensor fusion, low-latency inference and on-device AI. “Together, ADI and Alif can address a broader range of customers’ most complex system-level challenges,” ADI said in a statement issued Wednesday.
“AI is moving out of the data center and into the physical world, where latency, power and trust cannot be compromised,” said Vincent Roche, CEO of ADI. “This is Physical Intelligence in action.”
The deal has been approved by the boards of both companies and is expected to close by the end of 2026.
Privately-held Alif is based in Pleasanton, Calif., and reported in March it has 186 employees worldwide. As of last November, ADI had 24,500 employees. ADI reported a 40% rise in third-quarter revenue last month. News of the deal caused a drop in ADI stock by less than 1% to $362.04.
The ADI-Alif deal is part of an industry-wide semiconductor consolidation converging around physical AI as a full system where sensing, edge compute, connectivity , control and power are combined.
The biggest such deal in this vein was Onsemi’s $7 billion deal to buy Synaptics in an all-stock transaction announced in June.
Also, STMicroelectronics completed the transfer of NXP’s MEMS business on Feb. 2. Meanwhile, NXP has simultaneously concentrated on higher-level physical AI layers, including networking, security and edge AI acceleration.
Other companies are consolidating their technology and internal organizations around physical AI, especially Nvidia. The list also includes Qualcomm, Intel, AMD and Ambarella.
All of these chipmakers want to own a large part of the total value chain of physical AI, from sensing/perception through to decision and action. They want a full platform, not just a component of it. One analyst put it this way: the larger trend is analog plus digital, sensor plus compute and silicon plus software.
