getty Most companies will never design a chip, yet advances in semiconductor technology increasingly determine what they can build, how they innovate and how they compete.
For decades, semiconductors were treated as a specialized technology domain, essential building blocks that were largely invisible to anyone outside engineering and technology teams. For most other executives, the semiconductor layer was easy to ignore. Today, the technologies shaping modern business—from AI and automation to connected products and intelligent infrastructure—are all built on a foundation of increasingly sophisticated silicon.
What began as a technology trend is rapidly becoming a business reality. Across industries, semiconductor innovation is reshaping products, redefining competitive advantage and creating new opportunities for growth. In many ways, every industry is becoming a semiconductor industry, whether they recognize the shift or not.
As intelligence moves into the products and systems we use every day, AI is no longer confined to data centers and the cloud. It’s moving to the edge, embedded in vehicles, medical devices, industrial equipment, consumer products and critical infrastructure, including physical AI with robotics and smart drones. This shift is making the underlying silicon more important than ever.
Consider the automotive industry. Mechanical engineering and horsepower once primarily defined cars. Today, many consumers evaluate vehicles based on driver-assistance features, infotainment experiences, connectivity and increasingly autonomous capabilities. As a result, the vehicle’s compute capability is becoming as important (or even more so) as engine performance. The many silicon chips inside the vehicle are defining the product itself.
The same shift is visible across other industries. Data center infrastructure is becoming more adaptive and responsive to workload and energy demands, shifting beyond one-size-fits-all computing. Medical devices are becoming more intelligent and connected, enabling AI-assisted imaging, robotic surgery and portable diagnostics. Industrial equipment is becoming more autonomous as robotics that once performed a fixed function are now expected to sense, analyze, learn and improve productivity over time.
Decisions made far below the application layer are increasingly influencing AI performance, energy efficiency, safety, cybersecurity and user experience. Customers may never see those technologies directly, but they experience the outcomes in enhanced product features every day.
This shift is also changing how companies think about technology ownership. Historically, organizations could purchase off-the-shelf technology components and focus their efforts elsewhere. Today, that approach is no longer enough, and vertical integration is becoming the norm.
Some of the world’s most influential companies are investing more deeply in customized silicon because they recognize it as a source of differentiation. In data centers, the custom-silicon race is no longer limited to AMD, Intel, Nvidia or other semiconductor companies. Amazon , Google , Meta and Microsoft —the leading hyperscalers—are investing directly in semiconductor innovation and have been showcasing their own silicon at industry events.
Cars once differentiated primarily through their engines. Today, Tesla , BYD , XPeng , NIO , Li Auto and others are competing through software, compute and AI . The common conclusion is clear: Technology that once sat below the product experience now directly shapes it and often provides the differentiation customers can see.
Still, not every organization needs to build its own chip. Some can integrate commercial silicon, while others can commission custom silicon or co-design with partners. But the strategi
