Sep 1, 2026 10:16am Sensors Applications Optical / Imaging Defense / Aerospace Automotive / Transportation --> Some people don’t like everything vision sensors are used for. Vision and imaging sensors are commonly deployed in various cameras, from consumer brands to industrial and surveillance products and even by NASA. The growing public displeasure has been especially severe for those cameras that identify vehicles using Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) systems. Some groups worry how data gathered by the cameras is used by law enforcement to target individuals with AI-enabled surveillance technology. Ultimately, it’s not the sensors per se that bother people, but how they are used. (So, what else is new in tech?) On Monday, the Florida Department of Transportation revoked permits for Flock Safety and other license plate reader cameras installed along state highway rights of way. Agencies were given 30 days to remove them and FDOT said it would stop approving new installations on state highways. The state said the cameras posed privacy, misuse and surveillance worries. Florida may be the most aggressive of states moving against Flock and other ALPR deployments on state-controlled roads. In Texas, the governor has halted state funding for Flock cameras. In Washington, the state has tightened regulations for ALPR use and data handling instead of banning the tech outright. In Illinois, restrictions are focused on data sharing and privacy concerns, but not an outright tech ban. In several other states, including Arizona, Oregon, New York, California, Colorado, individual communities are ending contracts or removing cameras. Louisiana has debated a possible statewide ban, according to reports. So far the bans and restrictions are for ALPR systems, but not cameras and vision sensors used to slow down traffic in construction and school zones. Some vendors are now combining speed-enforcement and ALPR functions on the same gear. As a result, regulators might struggle in the future to distinguish a speed camera from a vehicle surveillance camera. Flock has opposed the restrictions and argues that ALPR systems help solve crimes and locate missing persons. Customer agencies retain ownership of the data collected by Flock cameras. Flock stores the data on its servers but does not own it. Flock also deletes data after a period of time set by the customer. Many sheriffs continue to defend the technology as an important investigative tool. Florida’s move does not challenge the accuracy of the sensors involved, but the legitimacy of the surveillance network created when thousands of sensors are interconnected. Flock claims on its websit e to have served 6,000 communities with its technology and argues 15% of reported crimes in the US are solved with help from Flock. In one recent Flock blog, an independent study found vehicle theft dropped 11% after flock cameras went live. In a blog post of Aug. 13 , Flock CEO Garrett Langley recommended a default ALPR data retention period of just seven days, down from 30, and new audit and misuse-detection requirements for customers. He also recommended controls over data sharing between law enforcement agencies and mandatory multi-factor authentication. He concluded: “We are not perfect, so we will keep listening, improving and building a better standard for public safety technology together.”
