It positions the device as an upgrade to existing exterior camera solutions such as surround-view systems (SVS) and ultralow-power edge AI-based parking surveillance systems. Supporting the move to software-defined vehicles, it enables feature customisation and over-the-air updates, highlights the company. “With the OAX7700 asic, we are enabling existing automotive camera solutions with highly efficient parking surveillance functionality while at the same time supporting modern software-defined vehicle architectures – our customers are investing in a system that can be updated and enhanced throughout the vehicle’s lifetime,” said David Ho , senior marketing manager at the company. “We’ve leveraged the technology from our security market segment, where Omnivision is recognised as a global leader.” Specifically, the OAX7700 Asic integrates an NPU (neural processing unit) to support edge AI functions such as human presence detection, person and object detection, and distance measurement. In always-on operation mode, the camera continuously monitors the vehicle’s surroundings. And it consumes minimal power until an event triggers it to switch to normal mode, says Omnivision. It records five to 10 seconds of pre-roll video, which the electronic control unit can then further analyse to validate the trigger and activate an alarm if necessary. This helps the system eliminate false alarms caused by wind, birds, trees or debris. The OAX7700’s pre-roll is also available for the car owners as evidence should a significant event occur. Note that the NPU allows third-parties to develop their own AI-based algorithms on the chipset. This can extend functionality beyond security while still preserving the Asic’s exceptionally low power consumption, says Omnivision. Developers can also deploy sophisticated updates over the air.
